Smoke Detectors Save Lives

SMOKE DETECTORS
SAVE LIVES!

We all have them in our homes but when was the last time you checked them?
According to the NFPA...
"In 2010, U.S. fire departments responded to 369,500 home structure fires. These fires caused 13,350 civilian injuries, 2,640 civilian deaths, $6.9 billion in direct damage.  ... Almost two-thirds (62%) of reported home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms."

Don't become part of a statistic... check your smoke detectors today!

Some tips from Global Security, Inc. ...

#1 - Check your smoke detectors at the same time each year... Perhaps New Years Day, Fourth of July or when you change your clocks for daylight savings time.  Mark your calendar to remind yourself.

#2 - Use a vacuum with a hose attachment or a can of compressed air to clean small particles of dust out of the detector.  This will help reduce false alarms.

#3 - Change the detector's battery annually.  Most detectors use a 9V battery.  These are the small rectangular batteries that can be purchased at most any store.

#4 - Don't want to change batteries each year?  Purchase 9V Lithium batteries from a local battery store like BatteriesPlus or from Lowes or Home Depot.  They cost a little more but will last up to 10 years.

#5 - Look at the date on your smoke detectors.  If the home is over 10 years old and you still have the original detectors... you need to replace the entire detector.  Residential smoke detectors only have a 10 year life.

#6 Look up the manual for your smoke detector and keep it handy.  Often people disconnect detectors when they start to malfunction rather than refer to a manual for a solution.
